These brakes are also called Normally ON type, failsafe spring loaded disc brakes. Very compact and modern in design. Foundation is not necessary as they are mounted directly on the non-driving end shaft of the motor. It consists of liner plates (friction disc) with square hole at the centre. One corresponding piece of square hub is supplied with the brake. This hub is keyed to the motor shaft and liner plate is free on the hub. Normally, liner plate is gripped between two discs with the help of spring pressure. | |
When current is supplied to the brake, one disc is attracted by electromagnet against spring pressure and the liner plate is released. Thus the brake is OFF. Once the brake is set it does not require adjustment or maintenance. When the liner plate wears with the use, then only air gap is required to be maintained periodically. Arrangement to release the brake manually is also provided. | |

In the power OFF state the compressing springs press the armature disc and rotor against attachment surface. The geared hub is firmly locked on the shaft and rotor slides over the hub. On applying rated direct current voltage to the stator the magnetic field produced will pull the armature discs over air-gap towards stator against spring force. Thus the rotor is released allowing shaft to rotate. | |
In the event of continuous power failure, the rotor can be freed by pulling the hand release of dead man type. The hand release goes back automatically to its original position and brake will immediately revert to its safe action. | |

The shoes and the base of brakes are of graded cast iron. Other components are of fabricated steel. The lever is hinged on the main arm, which is connected to the side arm through a tie rd and is stressed by a pre loaded compression spring. The compression of the spring can be adjusted to set the braking torque to desired value. The brake liner is of selected quality material and is riveted to the shoes by rivets. | |

These are normally Off type brakes are designed to have a stationary coil, Single surface plate and are used in dry conditions. They are light in weight, compact and have high torque at low wattage. There are two major parts to a Brake : Stator (Brake Body) in which the magnetic coil is fitted and the Armature Plate which is fitted on the Driven shaft. The brake body is bolted to a stationary surface. In normal condition, the brake is not in the applied condition and thus the driving / driven shaft is free to rotate. When the brake coil is energized the armature plate is attracted towards the brake body and comes to an instant stop. When the electric supply is cut off, the brake is released by a pre-stressed sinusoidal wave spring on the armature plate. |
